G-Shock vs. Two Determined Kids

Posted the 7th day of October in 2009 by Riley.

G-Shocks are really tough. They are all rated to withstand a 10 foot meter drop (try that with any other watch). Throwing a DW-6900CS-1 down from a fourth floor balcony might be a little much though. Sometimes you have to learn a lesson the hard way. Warning: graphic watch footage. "Let's have a test man."

Riley dont you mean 10 meter and not 10 feet?

The Triple Ten criteria is for 10 meter drop 10 year life span and 10 bar water resistance.

The problem with this test is that the kid actually throws it down with force rather then let it free fall. So this means that the impact velocity probably is more like a free fall from 333 feet 100 meters or so, on to hard concrete. So not a good test. I think it could have survived it if it where just free falling. I estimate the drop altitude to around 12 meters or 40 feet or so wich is doable.

I know from the WUS forum someone in New York several years back who successfully performed a drop test from 25 meters so it should survive 12 meters. I think 25-30 meters is around the maximum many G-Shock's can take before going critical. However there probably are some tougher models that can take even more.

Woudl not surprise me if the old Masters Of G are even more durable. They certainly feel extra toughly built. MR-G's and Frogmans also feel extra tough. Would be interesting to see drop tests where different models are tested and see if some survive better then others.

Thanks for the correction and physics JoakimAgren. Being in the US I've been underexposed to the concept of meters as a unit of measurement. :)
