Openers Magazine and GQ Japan have announced their pick for the watch of the year for 2009. The award goes to the GWF-1000B-1JR Frogman. This diver watch has been a great leap forward in many ways for the Frogman series. It is now a premium product with the addition of atomic sync, tide graph, moon phase, DLC and its new look overall. The automatic translation from Japanese is a bit hard to sift through, but suffice it to say, it sings the praises of all the technical and design details.

Thanks planetz.

It's too bad. Casio has added a ton of functions to this new and expensive Frogman, but also deleted a few trival ones. For instance, the countdown timer has no auto-repeat function anymore, a feature that has been standard in all previous models. Turns out auto-repeat is NOT available on almost all recent solar/6-band atomic models, eg. G5600R, G/W9010, GW7900.
Does having a solar (and/or atomic) module mean certain functions have to be omitted because of limitations in capacity? I doubt so.
That's a good question. I wonder if the auto-repeat could be a battery drain or something. It seems rather arbitrary unless there's some technical reason behind it.
It would be great to have an interview with one of the designer's of Casio's modules to explain some of these feature selections.
