Casio Releases New PROTREK Watch That Can Display Compass Bearing With the Second Hand
Analog Face with Three Hands and LCD
Equipped with Triple Sensors for Measuring Compass Bearing, Atmospheric Pressure/Altitude, and Temperature

BASEL, March 18, 2010 — Casio Computer Co., Ltd., announced today the release of the PRW-5000 high-performance PROTREK outdoor watch, which features three analog hands and an LCD for displaying compass bearing, altitude, atmospheric pressure and temperature.

The PROTREK series of outdoor watches make the most of Casio’s cutting-edge sensor technology to measure various kinds of natural data. This makes PROTREK watches very popular, not only among climbing enthusiasts, but also leisure hikers and car campers.

The new PRW-5000 is an analog-face PROTREK model with three hands and an LCD. It is equipped with triple sensors that measure compass bearing, altitude/atmospheric pressure, and temperature. Designed to meet the needs of mountaineers who prefer analog watches, the hour and minute hands of the PRW-5000 always display the time, while the second hand and LCD can also display outdoor data. For example, when used as a compass, the second hand points north; when reading the altitude, the change in height from a pre-selected location can be displayed using the second hand; and for atmospheric pressure, the second hand indicates the latest change. This enables the wearer to get an immediate picture of the reading based on the position of the second hand. Moreover, the watch is driven by Casio’s Tough Movement*, a super-reliable analog movement.

In addition to the solar-powered radio-controlled capability, which reduces the risk of losing the time when mountain climbing, the new watch has numerous other functions useful outdoors, such as a high-brightness white LED that illuminates the analog hands. The design of the PRW-5000 distinguishes it from regular analog watches with a second hand that looks like a compass needle and an overall look that exudes outdoor functionality. The PRW-5000 features a resin watchband with an orange accent on the face and second hand. Also released today is the PRW-5000T, featuring a titanium watchband with a yellow accent on the face and second hand.

* Tough Movement: A slim, high-performance, radio-controlled solar-powered movement that has four vital functions: Multi-Band 6 technology for receiving time-calibration signals transmitted over wide areas from six stations in the world (two in Japan, and one each in the US, the UK, Germany, and China); high-capacity solar power system operation; hybrid mount construction for added shock resistance; and an auto hand home position correction that returns hands to their proper position automatically if they slip out of place.
